My exposure to KD sounds similar to yours only mine took place in the summer of ‘82, in an empty theater in Wilmington Delaware. (There were 6 people in the theater actually) and as the space ship flies by in the opening moments of The Thing, 2 people got up and left. Which means that 4 of us got to experience one of the greatest action/suspense/gore-fests of all time. In a year that brought us ET, Rocky 3, and Poltergeist, The Thing still stands out as one of the best and has only gained traction over the years as an amazing film.
